What Data Says About Growing Rates of Crime against Women in India

India, just like its diversity quotient ranks high when it comes to violence against women. Rape and sexual assault are rampant in this part of the world.

Our heart pains to say even after the massive public outrage during Nirbhaya’s case in Delhi, nothing much has changed constructively. Recently, a minor, Asifa Banu was abducted from her village Kathua, gang-raped and murdered by Hindu nationalists. Over the years, the data shows a negative trend throughout; increasing numbers of crimes against women are reported each day, and the figures spike up forever.

Today, the language of data is more pronounced. It reflects the true picture of our society - how it’s fighting rape culture, bureaucracy, red tape and slow judicial procedures, painstakingly; how our mothers and daughters feel unsafe while walking down the streets alone during late evenings; how female feticide is on the rise despite the existence of massive awareness and government-induced social initiatives.

Here’s what the numbers have to say regarding the raging flame of crime against women in India…

The graph here shows an exponential growth of crime rates against women. Thanks to National Crime records Bureau.

Note: The phrase ‘crimes against women’ is an umbrella term, which includes direct, indirect, physical and psychological assault on women. This particular band of criminal acts is directed towards only women, hence falls under the tab, ‘crimes against women’.
